A Loaf of Bread, A Bottle of Wine, and Thou.

"Read 'em and Weep" or "Weed 'em and Reap", which one?

Friday, w00t!

Johnny Boy is 23 today. Happy B-day, Johnnay!

We ate a nice dinner to celebrate, plans slightly modified from their original form, since we couldn't get close to our intended eatery. It was right next to the MiraMesa cinema. The huge parking lot was swarming like an anthill with people trying to park to go see Star Trek. Very few things more frustrating to me than dealing with a bunch of rampaging lunatics behind the wheel, jockeying for parking places...

I'm batching it tonight - wifey took Daughter #2 with her to spend the night at her running partner's house. They're going to rise early so they can go run 24 miles. O_O The marathon is less than a month away (I believe), so they are in the home stretch, as far as training is concerned. More power to 'em, I suppose.

So I get to sleep in my own bed tonight instead of the couch! YAY! Don't ask, it's a long story...

Plus, I'll likely finish reading the first Black Company trilogy tonight as well... read myself to sleep again. Ah, life is good.

Except last night, I had a legitimate nightmare - haven't had one of those in forever. The kind that wake you up bolt upright, panting, looking around with bugged-out eyes in the pitch black... Don't remember all of it, but there was a big, open compound involved, and I was being hunted by some mean beasties, and my cell-phone calls for help were blown off as "crying wolf". I was prey. And I knew my self defense knowledge wouldn't help me against beasties, so I was sunk.

Sounds lame, I know, but at the time, it shook me up. Funny how dreams seem to carry so much weight as they are happening, and right after waking, but they half-life very quickly, until you shrug your shoulders and laugh it off, if you even remember it at all...

Worked from the rug shop today, which is outside the normal schedule. But the push to get website-related stuff moving is in high gear, so that's that. It will be nice to get it operational, so I can move on to other areas of the site that need serious tweaking.

Took Eldest and Youngest Daughters in with me to work. On the way in, we stopped at the nearby deli to grab some grub, and they had a baseball game on their bigscreen TV. Wild pitch almost took some dude's head off, but he ducked in time. It also almost hit his bat. Eldest asked me what happened if it hit the bat as he ducked, so I explained the whole "foul tip" rule.

Made me remember something that happened in my own little league career, which I will now relay here. I'll keep it brief.

It was the quintessential cinematic set-up. I was a youngster at the time, one of my team's best hitters. Late season, battling for first place, important game, the whole deal. Still further - last inning, bases full, 2 outs, we are down by one. I kid you not, this really happened to me... Count goes full, the crowds are into it, on both sides. The next pitch comes for my head. I duck, fail to pull the bat down, the ball nicks my bat and goes foul. Foul ball, count still full. Pitcher is obviously losing his nerve, right? Pressure's too much for him, which is why he almost hit me, right? Next pitch will also suck, right?

I watch it go right down the middle, steeeeerike three! Yer out, game over, time for Dave to go have himself a good half-hour cry.

For years, I would re-live that moment in my mind, wishing I would have at least swung the bat... But then I went many more years having successfully pushed that memory away, and happily forgot about it. Until today. Funny the way things work out...

I was always quite mediocre when it came to sports. Played baseball for years, always pretty much sucked. My brother Bryan would get more hits in a game than I would all season. I was a decent outfielder, but that was it.

Played golf for years as well. Had a decent putting stroke, but everything else sucked. Brother John was telling me today about all the times he's holed out from the fairway and gotten eagles, etc. All my years, I occasionally chipped in from just off the green, but never from anywhere further than, say 20 yards or so. John apparently holes out from the fairway regularly. An eagle? Bah, if I got a birdie, it was like Christmas morning for me. And I mean, I played from the time I was 8 yrs old to junior year in high school.

Same with skateboarding, really. Took me years just to learn the basics. I could eventually ollie pretty high, but other than that, mediocre. Jason could skate circles around me.

We all have our strengths, I guess. That segues nicely, I suppose. Thought I'd post some more of my art, since yesterday's sketches were well received.

That one is oil paints on a big ol' canvas. If memory serves, I had separate source art for the jungle and the snake. The pic isn't a very good one, sorry. Set the canvas up and took a pic with a digital camera. Best I could do.
---------------------------------------------

That one is guache paints on a big canvas board. I lucked out in a way - my instructor didn't tell me until well along in the piece that you weren't supposed to use guache paints on big spaces, but they were best for small boards/canvas'. He said it would get all muddy and splotchy, which it did. However, I risked ruining it by spraying it heavily with "spray fix" - which is normally used on finished pencil sketches to prevent them from smearing in the future (also preventing you from working on them anymore, so you must be happy with the results before applying.) Anyway, the spray fix eliminated all of the splotchiness, and the results (as you can see) were acceptable.
---------------------------------

This was fun - it's a type of reverse oil painting. You pick a color, and brush it liberally over a blank canvas. Oil paint takes forever to dry. Anyway, you grab a T-shirt and you start wiping away the paint. The more you wipe away, the whiter the area becomes. So that dude's face is basically varying levels of missing oil paint. Once I was happy with his face, I added the black and teal color for the shirt and the head gasket. Then the eye color and the Powell logo went on last. Anyway, it was fun.
-----------------------------------

That one is also oil paints. I liked the perspective. I ran out of time to finish it, so I told the teacher a little fib - that the painting was for a clothing ad (JIMMY Z) and so the focus should be the clothing, not the person. That's why I didn't paint the person in there. It was pure BS, but it worked. It's hard to get much detail with oil paints...
----------------------------------------

This last one is pastels on a sheet of bristol board about 18" x 30" or so. I added the text in photoshop after I scanned it, I don't know why. The text detracts from the piece, really. Bad font choice, bad placement. Guess I should fix it, eh!
---------------------------------------

I have others, but I won't subject you to them now - you've endured enough self-indulgence for one day, I'm sure...

Here's a dog sleep-running into a wall...

Todayve In History: May 9
----------------------------------
- May 9, 1945: VE Day! The end of World War 2, w00t! (There was so much celebration, they almost renamed it VD Day...)

- May 9, 1974: Impeachment hearings open against Pres. Richard Nixon around the Watergate scandal. (You could tell it was Day One by all of the impeach fuzz everyone had...)

- May 9, 1980: The first meeting of Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop of Canterbury. (I thought that "Archbishop" was what they call a McDonald's Chaplain...)

Well, I guess I'm gonna pack it in for the day. Until tomorrow, remember: never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Hey, Has Anyone Seen My Naru Jacket?

"Premeditation" or "Free medication", which one?

Greetings from the Left Coast! Twas a good day, all things considered. Checked some more items off of my "To Do List", which is always a good thing. Of course, I had to put in a killer all-nighter last night to accomplish some of it, but hey, it's necessary at times. I'm actually feeling pretty good, considering the 3 hours of sleep I got... no worries.

I mentioned in last night's partial meltdown post that I had found one of my old sketch books from high school, and that I'd try to scan a few in to share. Figure I should do it tonight, so here are some pencil sketches, circa 1987-88. Mostly skateboard drawings, which was my obsession at the time...

Doing small thumbnails so I can fit more pics. Wasn't very good at faces back then. Plus, I tended to draw the background as strong as the foreground in many cases. I didn't learn the fine art of proper contrast until art school in '89...

Again, I wasn't very confident back in the day, which is why I drew so lightly. Afraid of commitment, I guess (lol). 25 extra points if you know what famous skate video that quadruple invert sketch comes from...

Those were the board graphics from one of my favorite all-time boards - the Jeff Kendall Santa Cruz Graffiti board. Had two of those growing up. One was gray with hot pink grip tape! What was I thinking...

Here's one more...

Top Gun, lol. I made Kelly McGillis look kinda masculine, eh? I think she has a unibrow and an Adam's apple in that sketch. Like I said, I wasn't very good at faces.

I learned a lot in Art School. This one was about a year later:

Infinitely better, I think...much better contrast and composition, and plus I learned what a smudge stick was for, and how to use it!

Anyway, enough narcissistic gallery browsing for today...

I mentioned a few days ago that Laythe had loaned me a Terry Brooks book called First King of Shannara, which I have slated to read when I finish the latest Black Company book. Well, I browsed around Brook's website, and saw how huge the Shannara series is, and checked out his "recommended order for reading the books", since he wrote prequels and sequels and tangents, etc. 20+ books! Sheesh! Anyway, the book Laythe loaned me is suggested to be the 10th book I read (as a newbie), not the first... so I need to decide if I should read it anyway, or take the author's advice. Laythe said since it's a prequel, I should read it first, but Laythe does have shaggy hair, and everyone knows you can't fully trust a guy with shaggy hair...

I see that the new Star Trek movie is getting great reviews. Rotten Tomatoes as of this moment has the film at an amazing 94% positive rating, based on 138 different "official" reviews. Dang. I may have to check it out. For comparison, they have the Wolverine movie at a dismal 36% positive (213 reviews) and that McConaughey flick I recently saw at a further-dismal 27% positive (113 reviews). When I say "reviews", I mean published newspaper, magazine and qualified movie review websites, not just random 12 year olds writing a quick "it sucked!" in their facebook page...

Speaking of movies, I have Eagle Eye and Slumdog Millionaire in my desk drawer from NetFlix waiting for me. I ended up liking Shawshank Redemption more than I remembered. A good idea to wait 15 years between viewings, eh?

Today's Weird Video Clip is a lemur getting tickled.

Weird indeed.

I think I'll call it quits for now. I'll do the daily trivia stuff tomorrow.

Until tomorrow, remember, some mistakes are too much fun to only make once...

Losing My Mind, One Belch at a Time...

"Garden of Eden" or "Guarding a Vegan", which one?

Quick post tonight, sorry, I'm in a whirlwind tonight. As usual, I got my priorities mixed up, as far as what screamingly-important project to get done first. I'm having to shift focus, and in my addled mental state, that always upsets the apple cart. And of course, I am having video conversion issues again.

Tech Rant coming, feel free to ignore.

Tech Rant: Is there any reason why iMovie shouldn't import flash video files like a normal, user-friendly piece of editing software should? Hmm? Just drag-n-drop import like any other file type (except wmv's of course)? And any reason why my flipping video converter can't seem to convert a flash video file into anything else that iMovie can use? Any reason why I can't perform a single, simple function of adding a pair of flash video files that are NECESSARY TO MY PROJECT THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TONIGHT to the timeline so I can edit them into the clip, save it as a big quick time file and email it to Piranha tonight? ANY REASON WHY IT WON'T JUST WORK LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO!!!! >:O AAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

/me bangs head repeatedly on the desk.

End of Tech Rant.

It sometimes seems the more desperately I need to finish something, the more likely it will prove impossible to do, for reasons I cannot understand. I'd chew my own arm off in frustration if I didn't need it to drive my car tomorrow...

I tried to make some changes to the more permanent features of this blog. You'd think a professional graphic artist could figure out how to change the background color to something other than white, wouldn't you? Would have done it months ago if I knew. I found a place where you can downhload new "blog themes", but I'm kind of scared to try them out... what if it hoses my blog, and I can't "undo" it? I would weep softly into my warm root beer...

I added the YouTube clip of Noel playing How Great Thou Art to the right there, and just below it is a link to Abbie's video of Noel himself playing it at our church, if you want to watch the way it went down live.

I also added a Wagnervana Comic Archive, but the last few (the big ones) are showing up too small to read. I'll tinker with it tomorrow when I have more time.

I just tried installing Adobe Flash Player on my Mac... said it installed correctly. It won't play flash video files. I'm going to break something now...

Forget it... here's a cool picture instead.

EDIT: OK, I found a site called Movavi that is a free web-based video conversion service that seemed to provide a solution. It downloaded the file(s) straight from YouTube (the only place I could get them - I didn't have the originals), converted them to MPG4, let me download it directly to desktop, tossed it on a thumbdrive, moved it to my mac, imported just fine, and not I'm doing my final render. Of course, going through all those stages, the resolution is for crap, but that's the best I can do...

It's 2 am, and I still have a lot to do... do you pity me? Gonna bring in the dawn, I'm sure, by the time I get everything done I need to... I'd rather be reading, gaming or sleeping, but hey, what can you do, eh?

I found an old sketch book of mine from high-school with some pretty good pencil drawings in it. I think I'll scan some and pop them up here in the next couple days, just so you can take a look.

I may hop on again later if I need a break, and edit in more comments.

EDIT#2: It's 4 am... do you know where your graphic artist is? O_o

Made a mess of the video edit project. Feel like a complete tool. Got project #2 done, though (vendor directory). One more to go. Still running on adrenaline and residual Guava Rockstar from mid-morning. I have a full day at the rug shop planned for Thursday. Hope I can do it on little-to-no sleep.

Better toss in a funny video clip here, to end on a bit of levity.

I'm On My Knees In A $900 Suit!

Happy [insert day of the week where you are right now] to you all! I trust all is well with you?

If all is well, then, hey, enjoy it while it lasts. If all is not well, then, hey, the night doesn't last forever either.

There. Did my empty platitude scattering for the day. Now I can move on. Unless you want me to write a poem about it, too...

----------------
The Dawn Cometh, Fear Ye Not
by D.L. Wagner

(__|__) - PFFF!!!!
----------------

That's the extent of my desire to write a poem at the moment. Sorry. Maybe tomorrow...

Today was pretty grueling. Knocked out two (count them, two!) pressing projects, fired off an invoice so I can get some more $, but received a set-back from Josh regarding the rug website, which I'll need to address on Wednesday. Too much to do... times like this, I wish I had an assistant (among other things).

Heard from my good pal Jason C. today. He called from Florida. If you've seen the D'Jimmy 06 skate video in the margin to your right, you know which Jason I'm referring to. He's a golf pro now, at a nice East Coast golf resort called Dataw Island. Here's the link to the "staff" page. He said the pic of him makes him look like a guppy.

He's doing well this week... apparently last week he had the "week from hell" dealing with a kidney stone. He seems to be recovering ok. He called to play some tracks off of Depeche Mode's new album for me. Seems like a solid effort from DM. Jason likes it better than their previous effort, which I felt was pretty mediocre overall as well.

Here's a funny pic I found online.

Mona Lisa with a rocket launcher. Wonder what country that's in?

I started this blog so I could write whatever I felt like writing - similar to a personal journal, I suppose. I figured no one would ever read it (more than maybe once, out of courtesy if I asked them to), so I was safe to write without censoring - just let it fly. Well, it hasn't really worked out that way. I feel compelled to keep the difficult personal stuff out of it now - I mean, who wants to read about that? I doubt any of you would subject yourselves to another man's pain. You all have junk of your own to deal with, without volunteering to heap my junk on top of your own to boot.

So, I will refrain from personal venting here, save for a vague little blurb, that will serve no purpose other than to trick myself into thinking I'm still in complete control of this blog, without being swayed by outside opinion. The Blurb: It would be nice to not feel so friggin alone in my marriage.

OK, that's out of the way, now we can move on...

Here's a classic funny video, of a fake newscast at one of those gaspump video screens. I think you'll enjoy this one...

Funny. There are several at a Universal Studios photobooth that are also funny. Maybe I'll post one of those tomorrow.

Todayve In History: May 6
-----------------------------------
- May 6, 1536: Henry VIII orders English language Bibles to be placed in every church. (Reading them was optional - and still is.)

- May 6, 1889: The Eiffel Tower is officially opened to the public in Paris. (In attendance were 10,000 mimes.)

- May 6, 1937: The Hindenberg goes boom at Lakehurst, NJ. (Fire started when one of the maintenance workers lit his fart to celebrate their safe "passage".)

- May 6, 1954: Roger Bannister becomes the first person to run the mile in under 4 minutes. (Was his bike broken, I wonder?)

- May 6, 1994: The Chunnel Tunnel opens, connecting England and France. (Q: Why are the English always depressed? A: Because the light at the end of their tunnel is France.)

I started watching The Shawshank Redemption a little while ago, on Netflix Watch Instantly. Last time I saw it was the year it came out on video (1994) - I remember being disappointed, since I had read the book and, of course, thought the book was better. But, enough time has passed since either reading the book or watching the film, I thought I'd give it another go. I paused it to go get Eldest Daughter from work, then when I returned, I decided to do today's post. I'll resume watching after I publish todays hot air.

Gotta hop into the rug shop tomorrow. Tons of stuff going on there. Hope I don't forget anything.

*sigh*

Well, I'm done for today. Here's to a better tomorrow!

5 points to guess the movie quote in the post title....

Until tomorrow, remember, people who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either of them being made.
